We have a number of wine stoppers, some decorative, some not so much, but almost all of them function on gravity. They are heavy, and sit on top of the bottle, keeping the stopper in place.This one is different though. It works by having a couple of rubber gaskets that expand to fit the bottle neck when the lever is flipped over. It's shorter than most, so can fit on shelves easier, and we regularly leave bottles laying sideways with this stopper and have had no leaks at all after 4 years of use.I would buy more if it wore out, but haven't needed to yet.

These work great but after a while( a few months of constant use) the white plastic piece at the base of the lever starts to crack and weakens the ability of the lever staying down. The lever just pops up after a few seconds and it goes flying. Just be sure to hold it in place while you press down to keep the stress off the base, and they will last alot longer. Also use two hands when removing them from carbonated beverages. They will fly off with the force of a champagne cork. ;-D

Although the design quite nice, the stopper doesn't seal a wine bottle when you lay it on its side. I had wine dripped all over my refrigerator after using this pretty little device to "seal" a white wine bottle. Too bad. If you aren't going to lay a bottle on its side, then I suppose this stopper would be okay, but in my experience, it definitely is NOT leak-proof. Cheers, Denese
